| Thursday 23rd June | NESLEY FARM EXCAVATION: The 2011 training excavation, advised by the Gloucestershire County Council Archaeology Service, continues to be run by GADARG member Tony Roberts of “Archeoscan” who will guide us round the site and explain its context.
In 2010 excavation confirmed the existence of a large roman building and associated enclosure ditches. Significant levels of roman pottery, along with prehistoric pottery and many worked flints, indicate a settlement site that was occupied for many years. The presence of a hitherto unknown roman road serving the settlement and possibly linked to the nearby roman villa at Kingscote appears to increase the importance of the site. Please park in the farmyard, obvious when driving the long approach drive to Nesley Farm. Tea and Coffee will be provided in the finds barn so people can handle finds etc. |
19.15 hours - meet at Nesley Farm, Beverstone nr Tetbury (ST 853 925).
| Sunday 3rd July | WARMLEY: Champion’s zinc & brass mill is one of the most important industrial sites in the Southwest. Comprising elements of 18th century brass and zinc production (which included the smelting of ore and production of finished goods) it became more than a working site.
In addition to existing practical features such as the Ice House and the now destroyed lake, it is also a rare example of an 18th century industrialist's garden and has many unusual features, including the chequered walled garden and the grotto. Paul Driscoll, Community Archaeology Officer for South Gloucestershire will guide us round and into the Kingswood Heritage Museum (£2 entry fee). |
14.00 hours - meet in the public car park behind the gardens and in front of the nursing home (ST 366930 172860).
| Saturday 9th July | SEA MILLS (ROMAN ABONA): The major Roman settlement in Bristol was the town of Abona at Sea Mills which is recorded in the Antonine Itineraries of the early third century AD. Archaeological excavations have found evidence for the street pattern and shops within the town and the cemeteries outside it. Peter Insole, Archaeological Officer for Bristol City Council will take us on a walk along the river to talk about the Roman water front evidence as well as the 18th century harbour, then walk up towards the remains of the Roman building on Roman Way/Portway passing all the main sites. It's all level access and less than a mile and a half in distance. | 14.00 hours - Meet at Sea Mills Station by the harbour. Harbourside parking (ST 549758). | |
