~ GADARG ACTIVITIES ~

Here are some current and planned activities to get involved in as a GADARG member:

Sometimes GADARG is asked to undertake small scale archaeological evaluations and watching briefs. Such work provides opportunities for involvement, and various individual Group members have their own ongoing fieldwork projects. In many cases they would welcome help.

In addition GADARG regularly organises fieldwalking. The Group also carries out geophysical surveys now that we have our own 'user-friendly' resistivity kit. Recent sites have included a Roman road at Dymock, Iron-Age earthworks at High Brotheridge, Leckhampton moated site, and further work in advance of flood defences work at Deerhurst, and Roman villa sites at Frocester.

In the late 18th century, waste copper slag, from foundries near Bristol and at Redbrook in the Forest of Dean, was cast into building blocks. These were used in foundation courses, wall copings and as structural and decorative features in buildings in parishes close to the Severn. In cooperation with other Gloucestershire organisations, a detailed survey of sites where these slag blocks are found has taken place.

If documentary and local history research is your interest, we can certainly come up with suggestions and can usually point you in the right direction to get started. We have good contacts in the Gloucestershire Archives (County Record Office) and often help as volunteers with archive projects.

GADARG sets up an information display stands at archaeology and history open days and at other relevant public events attended by the public. Group volunteers are needed for these valuable sociable occasions. Perhaps you would like to help, a few hours at a time, with these.

And don't forget that as well as all these hands-on activities there are winter and summer meetings.
